Frequently Asked Questions: Insurance
Below are some frequently asked questions that I get regarding the topic of Insurance.
Q: Do you participate in any health insurance plans?
A: At the present time, I do not participate in any insurance plans.
Q: Why not?
A: This is an excellent question. The answer is that taking insurance would dramatically change the nature of my practice. First, accepting insurance creates more work and overhead. This effectively takes away the time that I can be seeing patients, preparing for patients, and engaging in clinical reading and other activities.
Furthermore, insurance reimbursement rates for psychologists are set on par with other mental health providers. Unfortunately, these rates tend to be quite low. This means that I'd have to see several more patients each week, which takes away time from preparing and other activities. Thus, taking insurance adds time pressures in two areas - increased overhead, and reduced reimbursement, and because of this I don't participate in any plans at this time.
Q: Is it possible to get reimbursement from my health insurance even if you are not a preferred provider?
A: YES!

If you have a PPO insurance plan, you may receive some reimbursement from our services. Typically, an insurance company will have a deductible to meet and then will reimburse a certain percentage of charges after the deductible is met. In practice, we seen this vary from plan to plan. We have seen some insurances reimburse up to 70% of our services. On the other hand, we have also seen some insurances that have reimbursed very little.
We recommend that you contact your insurance company, state that you are looking for out of network benefits for treatment with a licensed clinical psychologist, and to verify what your benefits and deductible are before committing to treatment. Often times it is better than you think it is!
